I’m Chris Crawford, and I’ll be your live blog host this evening as we begin a highly-anticipated World Series featuring the New York Yankees taking on the Los Angeles Dodgers. It’s the first time the two teams have met in the Fall Classic since 1981, with the Dodgers winning that series 4-2.
Back when the postseason consisted only of the World Series, the ’65 Dodgers defeated the Minnesota Twins in seven games. They gave up only two runs in their four victories — including three shutouts — while giving up 18 runs in three one-sided losses.
Standing atop a makeshift stage on the Dodger Stadium infield Sunday night, Dave Roberts grabbed hold of the mic, lifted his right arm toward the sky and asked the Chavez Ravine crowd a simple, resounding question.
Flaherty matched zeros with Cole for the first half of the night. He was almost perfect until leaving a curveball spinning somewhere in the vicinity of Giancarlo Stanton, who launched it into orbit. Ohtani, who was caught stealing in the seventh inning, was helped off the field by training staff. An on-field microphone caught him saying his left shoulder was injured. After the game, Roberts said that it was a shoulder subluxation and the Dodgers were “encouraged” by the initial results before further testing.
• In the third inning, Teoscar Hernández and Freddie Freeman hit the second set of back-to-back home runs in Dodgers World Series history. They joined Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager in Game 5 in 1981.
Game 3 world series
The Padres tagged Buehler for six runs in the second inning of Game 3 of the NLDS, though, to be fair, his defense did him no favors. Since that six-run inning, Buehler has thrown 12 consecutive scoreless innings spanning three starts. His stuff has ticked up too. Both his curveball and sweeper had their best movement of the season last two times out.
When Freddie Freeman hit a walk-off grand slam to save the Dodgers, who were trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night, he was a hero to all Dodgers fans, including 10-year-old Zachary.
There was a wave of exits after Gleyber Torres’ strikeout in the seventh but it accelerated in past inning or so. A tepid “Let’s go Yankees” chant started picking up but it was more like a sleepy midseason game rather than a World Series contest.
New York will need better performances from its batters, as Soto led the way but didn’t get enough help. Giancarlo Stanton notably went 1-for-4 at the plate while Aaron Judge’s postseason woes continued, going 0-for-4.
A potential World Series clincher. Or perhaps the first game of a historic comeback. Either way, it’s Game 4 of the World Series, and the Dodgers are one win away from a championship. Historically, teams with a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven playoff series have won 39 of 40 times. The one series loss is, of course, the Red Sox overcoming the Yankees in the 2004 ALCS. The Yankees will send rookie Luis Gil to the mound in Game 4 on Tuesday to try to save their season. The Dodgers will counter with a bullpen game.
